NCES Common Core of Data Public School Survey

License

These National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Common Core of Data Public School Survey data files and the procedures for constructing them were initially developed by the Urban Institute to support DataPlace; any public use of the data files, or works from the data files should be attributed as such. By using these files, you acknowledge that the Urban Institute is not liable for their use and you agree to the terms described in this section. The data are licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL), which means you are free to share and adapt these datasets as long as you follow the following conditions:

For any public use or redistribution of the data files, or works produced from them, you must make clear to others the license (ODbL) of the data files and keep intact any notices on the original data files (see attribution requirements below). Public use of any adapted version of these data files, or works produced from an adapted database must also be offered under the ODbL. Read the full ODbL 1.0 license text for the exact terms of use.

Metadata (Excel): The "license" worksheet explains licensing and terms of use. The "documentation" worksheet provides information on the data source and data geographies. The "version" worksheet lists the date when the data files were posted and explains any changes made in each version of the data. The "variables-area" worksheet lists the fields, labels, and formulas for the aggregate data, while the "variables-point" worksheet provides the listing for the school-level data.

Download Files

Zipped files for the most recent year of data (2008-09) are available separately. Historic data are zipped up into multi-year zip files for easier download. We have created summary-level files in two formats to accommodate different software (all with the same data and all zipped):

1. One file for each geography and school year in SAS format.
2. One file for each geography and school year in comma-delimited (csv) text format.
